Coaterex
Applications for Corrugators

What a corrugator can achieve with Coaterex coatings

Functional solutions for corrugated board based on water-based coatings. This section combines practical criteria for selection, application, and validation to scale projects with lower risk.

Water-Based Coatings

Repulpable and recyclable options for high-performance corrugated packaging.

Reliable Converting

Cold-set and hot-melt gluing compatibility according to the required barrier level.

Flexible Application

Implementation at wet end, dry end, off-line, and selected flexo cases.

Technical Validation

Pilot testing before full scale to ensure real production performance.

Application Map

Core applications for corrugators

From functional barriers to specialty finishes, these are the most common routes to improve performance, convertibility, and sustainability in corrugated packaging.

Water Barrier

Protect boxes for produce, refrigerated products, and water-exposed use cases.

  • HydraBan: water barrier with high dilution capability.
  • Michem Coat and VaporCoat: higher barrier levels for demanding jobs.

Moisture Barrier (MVTR)

Reduce vapor transmission for cold chain, frozen products, and humid environments.

  • VaporCoat: maximum moisture resistance.
  • VaporBase + topcoat: combined system for stronger performance.

Oil & Grease Barrier

Control grease migration in food and industrial applications.

  • Plate Kote: functional level for standard needs.
  • Michem Coat 50 and VaporCoat: higher oil and grease resistance.

Abrasion Resistance

Minimize scuffing and appearance loss during handling and logistics.

  • Nomar: excellent rub resistance.
  • ResistoCoat and Coat 40 Plus: routes for higher durability.

Release Properties

Enable product release for fresh, frozen, and bake-in style applications.

  • VaporCoat: release performance for fresh/frozen use.
  • Michem Bake and dedicated release systems for niche requirements.

Non-Skid

Improve pallet stability and transport safety.

  • CleanGrip: general-purpose non-skid for corrugators.
  • GlossCoat and SofTak: higher slide-angle performance levels.

Skin-Pack

Create strong bonding between corrugated board and film for display packaging.

  • Michem Tite 242AF and 335AF for general configurations.
  • Selection depends on ink coverage, application mode, and coat weight.

Specialty Treatments

Add niche functionalities when customers need differentiated performance.

  • Corrosion inhibitors, antistatic coatings, and heat-resistant OPVs.
  • Technical design according to substrate, process, and final specification.

What You Can Do

With our coatings, a corrugator can:

Build higher-value technical and commercial offerings without changing the core production logic.

Replace less sustainable structures

Move from plastic/paraffin-based options to repulpable water-based systems.

Improve convertibility

Maintain printability and control manufacturer-joint/flap bonding with technical criteria.

Increase logistics performance

Raise functional resistance to moisture, abrasion, and real distribution conditions.

Create premium industry solutions

Develop specific proposals for food, agriculture, consumer goods, and industrial markets.

Technical Checklist

How to make coating decisions with lower risk

Before scaling a reference, define and validate these points to align quality, cost, and implementation speed.

  • Define substrate, use conditions, and functional priorities (water, grease, moisture, rub, release).
  • Choose application method and location: wet end, dry end, off-line, or selected flexo cases.
  • Review impact on printability, drying, slip, and corrugator speed.
  • Confirm regulatory requirements when applicable (FDA, BfR, EU) and contact scope.
  • Validate gluing performance in your plant and at the customer with cold-set and/or hot-melt.
  • Run pilot trials before full production to tune coat weight and adhesive selection.

Recommended test methods

COBB (2 minutes)

Measures liquid water absorption in paper/board.

MVTR (ASTM E96)

Evaluates moisture vapor transmission.

3M Kit (Oil & Grease)

Determines grease and oil resistance.

Sutherland / COF

Controls abrasion behavior and non-skid performance.
